That’s simple! A battery is a hardware device that provides electrical energy to a device. Laptops and mobile phones (Smart phones) today use rechargeable batteries with advanced technologies that help them have longer battery life. Thus a battery can be recharged again to provide your computing device a good meal of electrical energy.
Battery used in computers.
Computers usually use two types of batteries that are
- CMOS battery
- Main battery
CMOS – Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
CMOS is a small battery cell found on the motherboard. CMOS is used to store BIOS, system clock settings and other hardware settings that help a computer to start and load the operating system.
Yes, you guessed it right! Or you may already know about it. Main battery provides electric power to a computer to run all its components. Your laptop and mobile phones have main battery at the backside, you can easily remove that (some devices have non removable batteries so you can’t remove a battery in them).
Types of technologies used inbatteries for computers
- Lithium – ion battery or LI-ion battery – LI-ion batteries are most popular rechargeable batteries used in portable electronic devices. Chemical compound used in different lithium ion batteries are lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, lithium ion manganese oxide battery, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC). Out of these lithium cobalt oxide posses high charge density but also posses high safety risk when damaged. The other types (other than lithium cobalt oxide listed above) offer lower charge densities but are less likely to cause any damage in the daily use. These batteries are used in mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras, and many other portable electronic devices.
- Lithium polymer battery (LiPo) – In lithium polymer battery, instead of using liquid electrolyte, a polymer electrolyte is used which is in solid form. These batteries are rechargeable and provide higher specific energy. Lithium polymer batteries are light weight in size as compared to the liquid electrolyte batteries, so these are used where weight is a concern. LiPo are used in radio controlled equipments like radio controlled aircrafts, mobile devices, power banks, thin laptops, wireless video game controllers. LiPo are light weight and provide higher specific energy that lead to their increased use in these devices
- Nickel cadmium battery Ni-Cd battery- These are the rechargeable batteries made from Nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic Cadmium electrodes. These batteries are made in variable size and shapes. However they are used less as compared to Lithium batteries. But their advantage is that they deliver power at their full capacity at high discharge rate throughout their life cycle, these batteries have good performance at lower temperature also. Ni-Cd cells are used n remote control toys, and other portable devices. However their material is costlier than Lithium ion batteries and Nickel cadmium batteries have high self discharge rate.
- Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) – This is a hybrid solution to the nickel cadmium battery. The difference is that in NiMH a hydrogen absorbing alloy us used in the place of cadmium. The other electrode is same in both the batteries that is Nickel oxide hydroxide. This hybrid solution made NiMH batteries have two to three times the capacity ate same size with NiCd battery and the energy density oh NiMH matched to that of Lithium ion batteries.NiHM batteries replaced NiCd batteries and are also used in electric battery vehicles.
