Floppy disk

A disk with thin and flexible magnetic storage medium sealed in a rectangular plastic enclosure lined with fabric that removes dust particles, was very popular in 1980s and was used to store software, operating systems and backup file at that time. Floppy disks were cheaper than hard disk drives at that time so they were popular data storage choices for people. Floppy disks just stored about 1MB of data. If they need to stores a software of bigger choice, they used multiple floppy disks to store single software.

Floppy disks came in the following sizes

  • 8 Inch diameter – introduced in 1972
  • 5 inch diameter– introduced in 1976
  • 5 inch diameter– introduced in 1982

Double sided floppy disks stored about 1.44MB of data. Drives used to read floppy disks are called as Floppy Disk Drives.

Floppy disk is also known by names like, Diskette, Floppy. They remained popular for about 40 years until when device with far greater storage starts becoming available to the people. These device like USB flash stick, Flash storage cards, Optical disks like CD, portable external hard disk drives.
